- July-August 2007: Group Exhibition, "Family Ties", Zionist of America House. Curator: Doron Polack.
"Family Ties" is a new group exhibition at the ZOA house, in Tel-Aviv. The artists taking part in this exhibition address the complex and changing issue of family relations. Using diverse techniques - painting, sculpture, drawing, photography and digital are, each artist examines in a unique way an aspect of family ties. Personal interpretations combine with social and cultural views of relationships within thee family - be it a traditional view of the family on one side, or mutations of the family nucleus and a revised look on the character of the institute and the functions of its members.
Family relations have always been a dramatic and colorful subject, inspiring artist of all kinds. Ever since the dawn of human history family has played a major role in society. The works of the artists offers a kind of mirror for the transformation of families, exposing the "fourth wall" of the stage of life, that trivial yet complex framework.
Over the years the family has gone through structural and functional changes under the influence of the cultural, geographic and social environment. In today's modern society one can find families that preserve the traditions of the past, and others that the traditional family structure fails to answer their needs.
Along-side the nucleolus and extended family frameworks, new manifestations of family, such as single-parent and same-sex families have developed. Unlike the traditional family - in which the characters and roles were determined by surrounding society, modern families define their own character, the limits of their responsibilities, and the division of roles within the family. Thus mothers have assumed an important economical role, while fathers share the relationships with the children starting from pregnancy and on to their education and upbringing.
